late entry: on the road

last week i went on the road.
saturday night; after getting heavily inebriated at natalia's house we all made it over to nam's for the KCPR summer trainee party. around 10:30pm, alex called me and we met at the barn, loaded the car and headed over to cass'. after sharing two j's with cass and brandy, alex drove us to his parent's house in santa cruz.
we woke early and drove to the russian river. there we went to healdsburg to drink delicious ales at the the bear republic. we cooled off in the river, finding solace in the water's restlessness under the redwoods. we set up camp on the grass next to the river in guerneville, the night was clear and the stars were spectacular. i woke up early everyday last week, i think i was just anxious to be out there everyday. i made potatoes for breakfast. we rented a canoe, it was only for a few hours, but we made it count.
we drove as far north as we could go without leaving this state behind. feeling our minds expand, we ventured into the redwood forest early in the morning. the forest was covered in ferns, and the trails followed creeks. we found elks, climbing trees, and ancient bridges; we found ourselves. we made it back to our beach camp just in time to open some good beer and watch the sun set.
we drove down the one with haste and set up camp in mendocino at the russian gulch. knowing that it was grown there in the woods, it tasted all the better. we found a waterfall and struggled with our fire.
on our way to yosemite we stopped at lake berryessa and cooled off in its shallows. we made it up to my friend phil's cabin before him and his friends. phil is my best friend from growing up, my oldest friend. it was the end of the week and my beard was long, i looked incredibly haggard. walking into the cabin in their abercrombie outfits; phil and his friends were appalled at my bare feet, my open beer, my cutoff shorts, and my ferocious beard. all their doubts about me were forgotten when they tasted my cooking. we went to a swimming hole under a waterfall with surrounding cliffs. i totallly did a couple backflips off the cliffs into the water. the last one that i did summed me up; i spun out of control and my body/ face hit the water with such force that i was red for hours, the bruising subsided after a couple days; i had so much fun.

katielane came back to san luis obispo yesterday. i move into a new house in a couple weeks. my parents think that i am throwing my life away, but i wake up happy everyday.

yesterday from 1-4 pm, I took my last undergraduate college final. I graduate this Saturday with a BS in Civil Engineering and I have no clue what I am going to do with my life.
The economy is in ruins, and the building industry is basically shut down. There are very few jobs out there, and although I have been applying for jobs the last 4 months, I can't find anything, at least I'm not alone. I have an average GPA for my major at Cal Poly, and unfortunately it is not good enough to get into any graduate programs that I would like to pursue; BUMMMMERRR.

my current course of action will be to stay here, in san luis obispo in the BARN, and work my hardest to get by. I plan on staying here until I can find employment in the field of civil engineering, or until I figure out my next step.

living at the BARN will probably be a little strange. betsy and matt are moving into a studio together (all my friends are growing up) they are getting a cable package that includes MTVJAMS! and moving right next to a liquor store, so many 40's will still be enjoyed with my dear friends. this BZ named helen is moving into betsy's room, I don't know her, I have just met her once; sharon (my landlord) made the decision to have her move in, didnt really give us a chance to look for a new roomate, whatever though, I live my own life, and I'm sure she'll live hers. nick will continue living there. nick is really weird, he needs to learn about personal space. my good friend collin is moving into katie's house, so that'll be fun.

I am going to go on a road trip in mid July with my old roomate Alex. we are going to drive north and hike/camp/fish/live the dream in several forests over the course of a week.

katie flies out of SFO on tuesday to go to peru for 5 weeks, I am going to miss that girl more than my stolen/lost copy of abbey road.

folk yeah!'s festival in the forest was quite possibly the greatest weekend of my life

so we arrive in the beautiful big sur friday morning. the first thing we do is eat burritos in a creek, yeah, we sat down in chairs that were in the middle of the creek. we then went to our campsite, first night we camped outside of fernwood at a different campgrounds about 1 mile away. after setting up the tent and drinking some beer and chilling out a little, we hiked to fernwood, there we signed in and were given our volunteer wristbands. katie and i had to go set up the merch table, and grahm and geoff had to set up the entrance gate table. the merch table was just slightly out of the site of the stage (blocked by a tree) so we asked sarah (homegirl that was in charge) if we could move the table about 20 feet so we could see the stage perfectly, she was totally ok with this and even offered to help move it. at the merch table we met pretty much all the bands as they brought us their stuff, it was awesome to converse with these brilliant musicians, and most of them gave us free cd's for our radio station (kcpr had a nice presense there) anyway, we only had to work a total of eight hours and we could see and here all the bands perfectly. every band there was absolutley incredible, i didnt dislike a single moment of any band, and a lot of the bands i hadnt heard that much of or any of before, so i was exposed to a lot of great new music. also, the real kicker was that there was a cabin there that was preparing really great food, most of it vegetarian yeahhh, the whole time, and it was conveinently located next to the kegs of stella artoir, newcastle, and some really fucking good ale; and all this stuff was free to bands and volunteers. saturday morning we moved our tent to fernwood. we also saw millie from freaks and geeks on saturday. oh and in the morning katie and i took an incredible hike all through the beatiful redwood forest, and meadows, and creek... i would go into detail about everything but it would take like 80 pages; so to sum it up, it was just a weekend long party in beautiful big sur, where we saw incredible bands play, while drinking free beer, and eating free food.

school has started, its alright, and it also means new radio showsss:
regular format with a trainee: wed 10am-12pm
PSYCHADELIC GOSPEL: thursday 5-6 pm this is like my favourite show on kcpr (its been on for years) and my freind francisco asked me to do the show with him. i am super into doing this show becuase i get to play tons of music that wouldnt have fit any other programming becuase when i was doing that other psychadelic show i didnt want to tread on the territory of this one so i only played psych pop, now i get to play so much more

tune in at 91.3 fm san luis obispo or stream live at kcpr.org
request: aim: kcprrequest phone: 805-756-5277

keep it the left

yesterday i had an extraordinarily pleasant day.
woke up from a deep hibernation, heated up the left over macandcheese that we had made from scratch the evening before. after eating that, i promptly passed out, while katie watched the office. upon returning to reality we picked up from my dear friend cooper. we then played mario kart double dash, matt later joined us as we listened to white rainbow along with other jams and we played pikmin too. on the bike adventure to teds birthday party we got pizza from guiseppes. there i enjoyed FREE middle eastern food, jessebo made some really good hummus. relocation to buchon house. later we bought ice cream and fell asleep to an ensemble of k-record affiliates and others.
chilling hard and keeping things super real.

post script: i am going to big sur next weekend to live in the forest and see entrance play at folk yeah presents

update of events:
i have gone to concerts for the past three weekends, which has been really rad.
three weeks ago i went to the friday of coachella; i went to see bjork and sonic youth, but totally dug just about all the bands i saw. of montreal was the only band that i saw that i didnt enojy, and i dig their stuff too, i just thought they were rubbish live. highlights of the day were seeing felix da housecat, rufus wainwright, and most importantly seeing sonic youth and bjork back to back [ i totally dig her new albulm "volta" ] i had such a great time, i am definitly going to do all three days next year and camp, the only bad thing about the situation was that i didnt so much sleep for like 2 days, bummer.
the next weekend i drove up to berkeley to see bright eyes support their new albulm "cassadega". it was rad because like 15 of my friends were there with me for it from back home and i hadnt seen most of them in a long time, plus i got to see alicccia before the show. however, i felt that bright eyes was kinda dissapointing, he only played three tracks that werent on cassadega, all of which were on either im wide awake or digital ash.. kinda boring, and forgot a verse of at the bottom of everything. but he had a symphony that played with him and they were playing fevers and mirrors stuff most the night which was pretty interesting to hear with cassadega. i do like the new albulm, but i was really hoping for some other tracks especially some rare ones since noise floor was also released this year, whatever, i had a great time still.
and last night i went and saw dinosaur jr!!!!!!!!!! in support of their new albulm "beyond". dinosaur never fails to amaze me, nor destroy my hearing for the next couple days. i cant even begin do describe how rad they were, but i will say this, they only played like 4 new songs, they played most of "youre living all over me" and their set was like 2 hours, plus awesome color opened for them and played a minimal set so that dinosaur could take their time.
so over the past three weekends i havent slept too much going all over california for concerts. on thursday i got poison oak [ some boyhood bravory ] bummer!
i do bikram yoga now and i totally dig it.
its become more and more apparent how terrible i am at life most every day.
i went for a walk tonight because i thought that i was going to die if i didnt [?]
oh; but i ended up getting the internship in sacramento, [yay] i totally dig bridges
also, ive been lazy and have subsequently grown something that has been refered to as a "leprachaun beard"

so i guess i havent updated this journal in tons of days, rightt?!
but thats because my life is boring and lacks content of an interesting nature. but, perhaps a brief recap of my past lifetime is quintessential. so winter quarter has come and gone. i passed all my classes, including my structural analysis class which was super crucial. i am totallllly diggin some of the stuff that i get to do in school recently. it appears as thought im going to have all my units in order and all the prerecs to be able to do my senior project next year, which will be totally choice, especially since my freind david is trying to put together a project to build this totally crucciaaalll bridge in thailand through EWB. this quarter [which starts tomorrow mourning] im taking ce355 [reinforced concrete design], ce356 [steel design], ime314 [engineering economics], and kine250 [healthy living]. its a total of 15 units, i dont start class until 12 everyday and i dont have friday classes... choice. this quarter i will also be applying to be a KCPR dj, my friend grahm has been trying to convince me to do it for a while and ive decided to check it out; i will also be doing wow training, yeah betsy and i are going to be wow leaders, cash; and i will be working at garden grille again, what can i say, i totallly dig tossing peoples salads and being a complete rod everyday. theres this girl that came in for my shifts all the time last quarter and ive been trying to work up the nerve to ask her out for my past 4 lifetimes; i think i need to take progressive steps to make my life rad.
over my spring break i basically saw all of san bruno; good times. i spent most the time and energy going to some job interviews, i think im going to work at the bridge company in sacramento this summer; not such a choice location and stuff, but come on.... ill be doing actual bridge work; including some on the two tower suspension in sacramento and teh bay bridge! so thatll be total cash and ill live with my old dear freind phil. this quarter im am going to folk fest, coachella [bjork!!!!], bright eyess, and dinosaur jrrrr; not to mention that both bright eyes and dinosaur are dropping new albulms this quarter [i just got my advance copy of teh new bright eyes and the bonus ep] i am also going to start hiking and biking a lot more; ive been doing morrow bay and bishops hikes all teh time and justins down to ride with me now.
this is going to be teh best quarter of my liffeee

school:
this past week was when school hit, i had a philosophy paper due on tuesday [and even though i totally suck at writing, i think the paper turned out alright, im excited to get that grade back, it was on moral relativism] i had a midterm and lab report due in ce-259 [civil engineering materials] as well on tuesday, the lab report was reallly good, but the midterm was wayyy hard, today i had my fluid dynamics midterm, sooooo fuckin hard. i think i did pretty good on it though, but i knew, as i was taking the exam that i made to errors, but i didnt know what i was doing wrong, as i walked out of the class i realized that i changed cm squared to meters squared by dividing by 100 and not 100 squared, because im a retard, and that on the last problem with the velocity profile after i integrated i should have multiplied by (d)(pi)/4 instead of (d)(pi)/2 which i used, that question was weird due to the shape of the inlet pipe, whatevv. ugh, hopefully i get a B ish on it after the curve.
but overall akademically, ive really been slacking off, yet getting by. i have a midterm in environmental engineering next week, hopefully that exam goes well and all my returned exams/ labs/ papers are alright.

other (word choice?):
i bought a car; its a very girly looking silver civic, but its the "fuel economy" civic, and the origional owner changed the cold air intake and slightly lowered it so it gets about 38-45 mpg (which is wayyyy fuckin good) and runs with about 1/7 of the harmful pollutants and emissions that the "average car" emits [yay for being a hippy!]
it only has am/fm right now, but i think im going to put a cd deck with an auxilary in it around winter time [ kyle said hed help me so thatd be rad] but in the mean time, i think i should buy this, what do you think?

its me, rightt???!?!
i work at the garden grille, and have been working there for like 4 or 5 (?) weeks now. the job is kinda awful, but i make my own hours and i get a free meal each time i work and its like $80 a week or so, so whatevv.
i was totally pumped when jeff won project runway.
thi weekend i am driving bo, teh roomate, to sfo, so i get to hang out in town this weekend, rad. david boales birhtday one night, my sassy sushi with alicia, and i think a party the other night tooo?
FLAMING LIPS ARE PLAYING DEC 30THHHHHHH everyone neeeds to go, alicia adam and i bought tickets about 15 minutes after they went on presale.
i saw ghost mice the other week, which was rad. they sing about: being vegetarians, riding bikes, and the inevitable depression that life alots us all [ or more acuarately my life, i mean all of the above, not the depression thing]
i totalllly messed up my rear rim by riding over this gutter on campus, so last friday i bought a new rim [mavic open sport] and rebuilt my rear wheel, which was a totally frustrating yet rad experience, i was going to document it with pictures and call and title the selection "open hub surgery" but then i realized i dont really take picturess. but anyway, the open hub surgery was a complete and total sucess, thought the rim coulkd be a little more radially truuuu.
we set up a file sharing network at the residence, so now we share our video and music files, which totally rules.
lately ive felt really lonely.

biceyclist (9:20:40 PM): i found myself browsing through people the other day when i was bored and i was like, wow, im a total creep
biceyclist (9:20:57 PM): then i pulled my ethernet cord becuase i felt bad about who i was
ohaliciadear (9:21:04 PM): hahahah
